I have worked with several ports systems across many platforms.  MP is nice.  It is not hard to write new ports for MacPorts.  (Granted, compilers may be a bit trickier.)  The mp-ports reviewers are responsive and offer helpful feedback.  Without any existing users, for a new port, there is no risk of breaking anyone. ;)
