Trouble with command line tools

After upgrading the OS, software-update upgraded the command line tools.
The pkgutil command gives this as the version: 26.6.0.0.1781586589. I have
agreed to the Xcode license (via the command line). I don't know why, but I
can't open Xcode. When I try, it crashes immediately. I did download the
Tahoe intel version from the Developer site, but Xcode still won't open.

In any case, the command line tools were working because I built many ports
successfully before this started happening. In particular, I can see from
the verbose output that 'make' was working during those builds. Now, 'make'
gives the error, even after trying to reinstall the command line tools (the
dialog pop-up offers to install them, and I click the button to do it).
