 IMHO -- this is kinda fun I guess to see what exactly went wrong for you,
 but in the real world -- just start fresh.

 Whatever is happening to you is not a systemic MacPorts issue.

 Get a listing of your requested ports, uninstall all your ports, reset
 everything in /opt/local/etc/macports to default values, and reinstall the
 ports you want.

 If you start fresh and the problem comes up again on your reinstallation,
 then ... well something is seriously hosed on your system.
