 Well, I also did one more thing - I reduced the optimization intensity
 from -Os to -O0, because I was planning to debug it.

 configure.optflags -O0 -g
 }}}

 I tried that first with the default compiler, but still crashed -- but
 with clang-11 it just worked after I rebuilt it.

 Let me go back and see exactly what does and doesn't fix it.
