 Sorry, for some reason I missed your response.

 I worked around my issue by installing the `openjdk8-zulu` port and using
 that jdk, which works fine.

 Since openjdk8 isn't supported on M1, my suggestion would be to disable M1
 installs, point users towards openjdk8-zulu and close this ticket
