Perhaps there was never a great need for ppc/i386 universal binaries  
in MacPorts. The advantage to the user of universal binaries is  
having only a single version to download -- not having to think about  
what version to download. With MacPorts, we already have only one  
version to download (the source) and it is built correctly for the  
user's computer.


If we start providing binaries, we can certainly start with Intel  
Leopard binaries only. This would cover the majority of users. But I  
think there is still value in offering PowerPC Leopard and Tiger  
binaries. PowerPC users may not be as plentiful, but they are in  
greater need of binaries, as their computers are much slower and take  
much longer to build software.
