Perhaps there was never a great need for ppc/i386 universal binaries
in MacPorts. The advantage to the user of universal binaries is
having only a single version to download -- not having to think about
what version to download. With MacPorts, we already have only one
version to download (the source) and it is built correctly for the
user's computer.
If we start providing binaries, we can certainly start with Intel
Leopard binaries only. This would cover the majority of users. But I
think there is still value in offering PowerPC Leopard and Tiger
binaries. PowerPC users may not be as plentiful, but they are in
greater need of binaries, as their computers are much slower and take
much longer to build software.
