Openssl: built-in or ports?

Hello fellow macports developers,

I am building a port of NSD 3.2.1 for OS X. It requires an unspecified
version of openssl. It builds just fine against the openssl in a base
installation of OS X 10.5.6.

My question is: is it okay for me to specify the port to use the
built-in openssl, or is it better to make the port depend on the
openssl from ports?
