They already do. The fftw-3 and fftw-3-single ports happily coexist. The one even depends on the other. But, we have in the past wished that they might be combined into a single port, except for the problem that we have no supported way of running configure, build and destroot more than once in a port.

There are unsupported ways which are employed by the muniversal and php5extension portgroups and the php5 port.
