Of course, -I/opt/local/include is already in the MacPorts CPPFLAGS by default. So if this software looks in CPPFLAGS for -I flags as it should (and not just in the CXXFLAGS), then perhaps if you were to write this as a port, you wouldn't need to provide any arguments at all.
