You could also try to explain to MaxMind the benefit of versioned distfiles, and the concept that a distfile with a particular name should always have the same contents, and see if they would be willing to provide versioned distfiles.

They can still put a symlink on their server with an unversioned name, pointing to the latest versioned file. This provides the best of both.

In fact, it looks like they do already provide some versioned files. Are these the same as what your port is currently using?
