Thanks for noticing that we have conflicting instructions in the guide... we should fix that.

I don't really care what the modeline is, I'd just like for us to be consistent in what we recommend in the guide and what we use in the portfiles. (We currently have many many different modelines in use in portfiles which I find frustrating.) We should also use the same settings, as much as possible, in both the emacs and vim sections of the modeline. I don't use emacs or vim so I don't know the exact effect of these modeline settings. (I use TextWrangler which obeys at least some of the directives. )
