pkgng isn’t anymore the “Next Generation” package management tool for
FreeBSD but it is the “Current” once since it has replaced officially
the old pkg-tools based on makefiles.

The DarwinPorts took a new direction by using a real scripting language
and not raw makefiles.

pkgng is being ported to OS X and it seems it can already compile successfully
thanks to Landon Fuller, a former member of the team guided by Jordan Hubbard
which created the original DarwinPorts:
