Why?

I can begin to understand the advantage of a single binary format that can be used on multiple different Linux distributions. But there is no comparison in the Mac world. There is only one distribution of OS X: namely, OS X as distributed by Apple. And MacPorts works on it. So what problem exactly do you think MacPorts using "snap" packages will solve?
