I think your approach is correct:

1) the list is a good platform for discussing enhancements and additions

2) https://trac.macports.org is the proper place to ask for enhancements and additions to be implemented

3) openning a PR at https://github.com/macports/macports-ports with suggested enhancements and additions may be the fastest way to get them in place
