As you saw, it can help to provide a patch that fixes the issue. I have been dealing with CMake devs for quite a while and know they can be very convinced about their approaches and implementations, and often seem to understand code better than descriptions. Plus, a proper patch makes it easier for them to assess side-effects on the "normal" production systems that they're mostly concerned with.
