 Nevermind all that: I think I found the solution
 [http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=734423 here]: you need to
 install the gettext port. If I deactivate gettext, then I can reproduce
 the problem on my system. I'll add gettext as a dependency to the gd2
 port. Never woulda guessed a graphics library would require
 internationalization support, but there you have it.
