 I just went to the po/Makefile, and the following line near the top.

 {{{
 top_builddir = ..
 }}}

 Problem was the variable was empty, to the '/' that was used after the
 variable referred to root instead of being a directory delimiter as
 intended.

 I didn't run into any activation failure when I did it (and thus did not
 need 'sudo port -f activate grep'). Thanks though.
