 Ugh ... apparently there was a subversion installation in /opt/local.
 After removing all of the installed files I was able to do the upgrade to
 1.5.4 and everything works.

 I do still get the readline error:

 --->  Staging readline into destroot
 Error: Target org.macports.destroot returned: no such file or directory
 Error: Unable to upgrade port: 1

 Again ... that readline problem is a duplicate ticket that hasn't been
 active in 5 months. Any updates on that ticket would be greatly
 appreciated.

 I believe this one can be close then.
