 Is there a compelling reason why there are two packages for Perl 5?[[BR]]
 May I suggest that perl5.8 be removed and perl5.10 become perl5.[[BR]]
   * perl5.8 is unmaintained.
   * Perl 5.10 has been been the official Perl since December.
   * It would preclude the need for some sort of perl_select package.

 I am not an expert in Perl development, so perhaps there are good reasons
 for keeping perl5.8 around, but if not, then having just one perl5 package
 would be a relatively easy (and simplifying) change to make.
