Comment(by dluke at macports.org):

 CPAN still lists 5.8.8 as recommended for stable production use, which
 would be a good reason to keep it around.

 I think defaulting to 5.10.0 and having it install ${prefix}/bin/perl and
 requiring anything that wants to have the older perl5.8 to use
 ${prefix}/bin/perl5.8 instead would be good, though.

 (and/or something like perl_select).
