 All of my ports are updated and I get the same error message after running
 what you suggested.  It might be relevant to mention that I installed KDE4
 packages prior to trying to install Gnome (but had to deactivate some kde
 packages that gnome complained about).  The output of "port installed
 gtk2" is:
