python_select is simply wrong, as python_select does not provide any
 python.

python_select provides a unified path to a python version that should be
working. The fact that a highly uncompatible version of python can be
selected as the default python seems wrong to me.

 ${prefix}/bin/python2.6.

rubber does not need python to be provided by macports. It works well (I
tested it) with the python provided by macosx 10.3, 10.4 and 10.5, but
also with macports' python23, python24, python25 and python26. If you want
to patch it that way, please provide variants for those 7 configurations.
