 I attempted the same, but avr stuff seems to be broken on Gentoo as well.
 I did however find this link earlier today and now have working avr tools
 on osx

 Note: binutils and gdb error'd out at first because of -Werror was on..  I
 re-ran confure with --disable-werror in addition to the flags listed and
 everything compiled fine.

 I test compiled an led blink program and uploaded successfully to my
 board.  So far, so good until this port is fixed.

 Waiting patiently. :)
