 I know it's php5-mysql because i've left phpmyadmin and all the rest of
 the extensions off and it only crashes with php5-mysql.

 MySQL is
 mysql5 @5.1.47_0 (active)
 mysql5-server @5.1.47_0 (active)

 and it's running on the same server.

 I'll try to rebuild using the variants you described and report back.
