Comment:

 Well, the "--   package 'cairo-xcb' not found" was indicating that
 problem. Indeed, on a fresh install, awesome will make cairo be installed
 with this variant, but if cairo is already installed without this variant,
 awesome will fail to build. Closing as you requested.
