 that fixed it. thanks for taking the time to explain it too. a few extra
 notes:

 > Remove "+universal" from your variants.conf, clean freetype (sudo port
 clean freetype) and try again.
 for others, variants.conf is in /opt/local/etc/macports

 > Ok, then you're right, you do indeed have a Core (not Core 2)
 processor...
 my system profiler says: intel core duo; number of processors: 1; total
 number of cores: 2. but it is decidedly 32-bit.
