 Not sure why I have things in /usr/local, but its nothing to do with
 MacPorts. Looking at the contents it appears to have come from other
 applications I have installed.

 i.e. mainly fuse and ntfs-3g - Never of these where installed via
 MacPorts.

 I'll try what you suggest, but I will be surprise if the presence of the
 fuse libs is helping root build somehow ....
