 I was trying to follow the advice given in the #28536 ticket, and I indeed
 happened to solve my problem by installing {{{perl5.10}}}, and then
 uninstalling {{{perl5.8}}}.

 I don't understand why, but I had to {{{--force}}} macports to uninstall
 {{{perl5.8}}} :
 {{{
 % sudo port uninstall perl5.8
 --->  Unable to uninstall perl5.8 5.8.9_4+universal, the following ports
 depend on it:
 --->      perl5
 Error: port uninstall failed: Please uninstall the ports that depend on
 perl5.8 first.

 % sudo port -f uninstall perl5.8
 --->  Unable to uninstall perl5.8 5.8.9_4+universal, the following ports
 depend on it:
 --->      perl5
 Warning: Uninstall forced.  Proceeding despite dependencies.
 --->  Uninstalling perl5.8 @5.8.9_4+universal
 }}}

 But I'm not surprised not to understand what's going on here (meta
 packages, virtual packages, variants, versions, and options are all quite
 mysterious to me :-)
