 Thank you for your input. The question with the DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH actually
 solved this. I had this defined:

 DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/cuda/lib:/opt/local/lib:

 After I unset DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH, pkg-config starts without any problem. So
 it seems not to be a build-related problem, though I don't really
 understand why it won't start with this DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH.

 So for me this is solved. Thanks again for the quick help.
