 Yeah, you're probably correct. Especially the bit about how tightly
 coupled the inlined code is to the compiled code.

 The PortGroup sounds like a promising approach, but that's too rich for my
 blood. If someone wants to take over maintainership of `boost` to fix
 this, please do.
