 The LOG was gone, since I performed a 'port selfupdate'. I decided to
 rename the old xv-3.10a.tar.gz archive and fetch from John Bradley's site
 manually the xv-3.10a.tar.gz archive (in GNU Emacs, with TRAMP). Both
 archives indeed contain some different files, starting with:

 drwxr-xr-x bradley/users      0 1995-01-24 02:24 xv-3.10a/      drwxr-xr-x
 bradley/bradley       0 2011-01-27 18:11 xv-3.10a/
 }}}

 It particularly contains a subdirectory

 {{{
 drwxr-xr-x bradley/users      0 1995-01-03 20:52 xv-3.10a/.xvpics/
 }}}

 which contains a lot of .c and .o files.

 Xv could be built now!
