 After running many trials, I can now revise the statement to say that it
 doesn't always happen when resizing the ds9 window immediately after
 launch (no FITS file required), but fairly shortly thereafter.  The
 X11.app crash occurs when doing X-type operations on the ds9 window,
 including window resize, manipulating drop-down menus, and sometimes just
 receiving mouse focus.
