 Thanks eborisch.  I attempted your suggestion and continued to receive the
 error message both with py27-matplotlib +qt4 and with py27-matplotlib +qt4
 -tkinter.  Here are the steps I attempted:

 {{{
 sudo port selfupdate
 sudo port install py27-matplotlib +qt4
 spyder
 }}}

 followed by

 {{{
 sudo port -f uninstall py27-matplotlib @1.3.0_0+qt4
 sudo port clean py27-matplotlib
 sudo port install py27-matplotlib +qt4 -tkinter
 spyder
 }}}
