 The difference between the two is with the C compiler:

 mpich-default+gcc47 = clang C compilers and gcc47 for fortran
 mpich-gcc47+fortran = gcc for every compiler
 mpich-gcc47         = gcc for C compilers and no fortran

 This is a left over artifact from the previous version. I'm unsure if I
 want to do the work of removing it, so I'll wait to hear back from
 eborisch.
