 And beware of subtle regressions that only show up as "something no longer
 working" in practice, as I experienced after getting (forcing) VLC to
 build against FFMpeg 3.0.0 .

 FWIW, I filed a separate ticket with a PoC set of FFMpeg port
 modifications that should make it easier to support multiple installed
 FFMpeg versions; dependents that are locked into the previous ABI
 compatibility version only need to be patched to search for suffixed pkg-
 config data for FFMpeg (if they're written correctly and do not already
 provide a way to indicate how to locate these dependencies).
