 unfortunately neither of those options worked. But at least I can use the
 fallback library setting workaround on this machine. I love this old
 MacbookPro 2,1 -- but it's stuck at 10.6.8/10.7 for hardware reasons,
 hence the snowleopard fetish.

 If you have any more ideas / want me to explore something further just
 ask.
