 even there, though -- there are (currently) 5 libstdc++.dylibs installed
 by MacPorts for different versions of gcc. They must be able to interact,
 Larry, otherwise everything would have to be built with only one version
 of one family of a c++ compiler, and we know that's not the case.

 And if gcc5's version of libstdc++ can interact with gcc48's version, then
 why not apple-gcc-42's version too?

 Ah -- sometimes this gets to be as confusing as those time-travel movies
 where you go back and bump into a previous version of yourself :>
