 If wine required some ports to be universal, and you did not have them
 universal on your system, you would not have been able to build wine. (You
 would have gotten error messages about symbols not being found for the
 i386 architecture.) Since you were able to build, I don't think lack-of-
 universal is the problem. MacPorts has included code to ensure
 dependencies are rebuilt universal when needed, ever since universal
 variants started being a thing a decade ago.

 Also, I have "+universal" in my variants.conf and build most ports
 universal, but I see the problem on my system too.

 I don't know how to diagnose what the problem is.
