 I had the exact same problem after I upgraded all ports recently, the
 problem seems to be the combination:

 couchdb at 1.6.1 and erlang at 20.0_0+hipe+ssl

 After going back to erlang at 19.3_0+hipe+ssl CouchDB starts up normally
 again.
