 Mojca, it seems to work reasonably. It just built through texlive-bin and
 other cxx11 things on my 10.5 machine without intervention, and gcc6
 respects the gcc4-abi flag so it should be compatible with the system's
 libstdc++.

 I'm sure there will be failures (gcc6 can't build everything), but this
 approach should let a number of things work, and save some aggro. I don't
 see how it can make anything worse for people. If all are in agreement, I
 can make a PR and we can assess the fallout.
