 Thanks for looking into this issue.

 I tried the suggestions.

 I checked that my macports.conf is file set per the instructions at the
 LibcxxOnOlderSystems link, conf file attached.

 I installed clang-5.0 then as suggested ran:

 {{{slim:~ tom$ sudo port -v install protobuf3-cpp configure.compiler
 =macports-clang-5.0}}}

 But it failed with the same error. New log file attached.
