 Right. I have my 10.6.8 system set up with LibcxxOnOlderSystems as well,
 and it builds protobuf3-cpp without a blink against `libc++`...

 Perhaps we might have the OP try a newer clang? Please make sure you have
 `clang-5.0` installed, and then
 {{{
 sudo port -v install protobuf3-cpp configure.compiler=macports-clang-5.0
 }}}
 should do it.
