What you suggest does not work and also this does not work:

$ sudo port uninstall gcc7
$ sudo port clean --all gcc7
$ sudo port uninstall root6
$ sudo port clean --all root6
$ sudo port install gcc7

Maybe there is some issue with gcc7 @7.3.0_3 which was released with the
same bunch of packages (see my OP)
