 I configured my system the same way as in the wiki:

 sudo svn checkout
 https://svn.macports.org/repository/macports/users/ryandesign/no_default_gcc
 /opt/local/bin/no_default_gcc
 and then modifying my macports.conf.

 With this configuration I can not replicate the error you found unless I
 use the universal variant:
