 The assembler ! what the heck... it sure looked like a linker issue. Good
 work.

 IIRC, `/opt/local/bin/as` would use `/opt/local/bin/clang` as the
 assembler... still not sure what is exactly going on to cause the error,
 but we have a good clue now...
