 Could this be due to having installed `gcc9` rather than `gcc8`? Is there
 a way to fix these Library search paths?

 Of course, I happen to have exactly the same problem compiling a C hello
 world program: it fails unless I specify `-L/usr/lib -I/usr/include` on
 the command line of `gcc-mp-9`

 Sorry to have bother you with this - should really be another ticket I
 guess.
