 Building gcc9 from source worked!

 sudo port -v -s install gcc9
 }}}
 It took a very long time (just under 1h30) but at least now the library
 search path and the include search path are well set up. I guess the
 configure scripts were able to tweak the installation properly. Many
 thanks for the suggestion!
