 The only time I have seen this error is if the date of `configure.ac` is
 more recent than `configure`.\\
 For example, `touch configure.ac` reproduced this error.\\
 Octave helpfully tries to regenerate configure.

 Can you think of any reason how the modification date of `configure.ac`
 might have been modified?
