 I was just bitten by this for the first time. And after the initial "huh?"
 reaction, it was easy enough to forcibly deactivate the port first, and
 then upgrade it.

 That being said, until the Gnome folks fix the issue reported by Ryan, I'd
 vote for Ken's "force the old one out" approach. MacPorts is an amazing
 project/resource, and is used by countless users... both technical folks
 like all of us, as well as non-techies.

 And in the interest of providing the best MacOS user experience possible,
 wouldn't we want things to "just work," as much as possible?
