 We do want things to "just work". That's the reason why we don't
 deactivate ports at unexpected times. If we were to deactivate poppler
 before building it, and poppler were to then fail to build for some
 reason, poppler would remain deactivated, causing any software the user
 had installed that required poppler to fail to work. That would in turn
 probably generate more tickets for us to deal with. We would rather have
 the user take responsibility for deactivating the port so that they have
 some awareness of the possible need to reactivate it manually later.
